Frederick Dalgety

Frederick Gonnerman Dalgety (December 3, 1817–1894) was the founder of Dalgety plc, one of the United Kingdom's largest conglomerates.

Career

Born in Canada, Frederick Dalgety arrived in Sydney in 1834 and became a clerk in a local merchanting business.[1]

By 1846 he was running his own business in Melbourne outfitting sheep ranchers.[1] In the gold rush he supplied goods to diggers but also traded in gold.[1] At this time he lived at Como House in Melbourne which he bought in 1852.[2]

In 1854 he moved to London where he operated as a wool trader. He lived permanently in England at Lockerley Hall in Hampshire after 1859 and was appointed High Sheriff of Hampshire for 1877. [1]

By 1884 his Company, Dalgety & Co, had operations in London, Melbourne, Geelong, Launceston, Dunedin, Christchurch and Sydney.[1] He remained Chairman of the Company until he death in Hampshire in 1894.[1]

Family

In 1855 he married Blanche Trosse Allen and together they went on to have five sons and five daughters.[1]
